An empty folder does not always mean the files are gone. Start with read-only checks, recover the data to another drive, then deal with the card itself.
Stop using the SD card immediately. Try another reader plus hidden-file view first. If the files stay missing, scan the card with Disk Drill, preview key results, then recover them to a different drive.
Do not format, record to, repair, or reuse the SD card yet. Any write may overwrite missing data. If the card clicks, heats up, disconnects, or shows the wrong capacity, stop home recovery.

A normal software scan assumes the card can still be read reliably. Stop if its listed capacity changes, it vanishes during scans, read speed drops to nearly zero, or the reader repeatedly reconnects.
For irreplaceable data, repeated scans are a poor gamble. Preserve the card in its current state, record the symptoms, then ask a recovery lab about imaging or direct flash recovery.
A damaged directory can hide files while their raw data still occupies space. Other causes include hidden attributes, an interrupted transfer, malware, a faulty reader, an accidental format, or a camera that created a new folder structure.
The symptom matters. A card showing normal capacity with used space calls for a visibility check. A RAW volume needs recovery before repair. A card reporting zero bytes or the wrong size may have a hardware fault.

New photos, downloads, formatting, or repair attempts can overwrite the space holding missing files. Lock the card if it has a physical switch, then remove it until you are ready to inspect or recover the data.
