PhotoRec recovered several common camera RAW types from a reformatted SD card because it searches storage for known file signatures rather than relying on the damaged file system. That basic carving method is useful when a card appears as RAW or refuses to mount.
The result was far less convincing once files were fragmented. Usable recovery reached 61% on our SSD image plus 68% on the SD card scenario. Some images contained valid previews but incomplete RAW data, so opening a thumbnail was not proof that the original photo was healthy.
PhotoRec supports formats such as CR2, NEF, DCR, SR2, PEF, plus ORF. Still, format recognition cannot rebuild data that has been overwritten or scattered beyond what signature carving can follow.
PhotoRec usually replaces original names with sector-based labels such as f12345678.cr2. Folder structure is normally gone too. A 2,000-shot assignment can emerge as a pile of numbered files spread across multiple recup_dir folders.
EXIF sorting tools can rebuild part of the mess by capture date, camera model, or lens. That extra cleanup still takes time, plus photos with damaged metadata remain difficult to identify. Disk Drill presents previews, filters, file categories, plus recoverability clues before export, which is much easier to manage.
The standard PhotoRec interface runs in a terminal-style window. You move through disks, partitions, file systems, output paths, plus format options with the keyboard. One wrong destination choice can fill your system drive with recovered files.
QPhotoRec adds a basic graphical screen, yet it still assumes you understand partitions, free-space scans, whole-device scans, plus safe output locations. Disk Drill offers a clearer device list, visible scan progress, thumbnails, search, plus recovery filters.
PhotoRec lets you limit recovery to selected format families, scan unallocated space, inspect a full partition, retain corrupted files, or work from a disk image. These controls can cut clutter if you know exactly what your camera produces.
The format list is not always intuitive. Several RAW types sit inside broader TIFF-related options. Disabling too many signatures can also create oversized output files because PhotoRec may use the next recognized header to decide where a file ends.
PhotoRec costs $0. It is open-source software released under GPL v2+, with no file-size cap, card-size cap, subscription, or locked recovery button.
The tradeoff is labor rather than money. Sorting renamed RAW files, finding duplicates, checking corruption, plus rebuilding a useful folder structure can consume an afternoon. For a small personal card, that may be acceptable. A working photographer facing a deadline will probably value Disk Drill's preview-led workflow more.
We evaluated PhotoRec with a 500 GB SSD image plus a 128 GB SD card containing CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG, JPEG, MP4, plus sidecar files. Scenarios covered deletion, quick formatting, a damaged file system, plus fragmented media. Recovered files were opened in native viewers, Adobe Lightroom Classic, plus camera-vendor software where available.
Scores emphasized usable original files rather than raw file counts. We also checked scan duration, naming, folder preservation, duplicate output, setup friction, plus the time required to locate a specific shoot.
Skip PhotoRec as the first scan when original filenames, shoot folders, or a fast client turnaround matter. Signature carving tends to discard the file-system context that keeps a large photo job organized.
A clicking hard drive, disconnecting card, zero-byte device, or storage medium that disappears from the operating system also calls for caution. Power the device down, avoid repair utilities, then contact a recovery lab if the images are irreplaceable.

Disk Drill costs more than PhotoRec, though it saves substantial cleanup time through previews, filtering, clearer scan choices, plus stronger camera-media recovery.
Disk Drill is the better choice for most photographers because it makes scan results easier to inspect before recovery. Thumbnails, format filters, search, recovery-chance indicators, plus a proper file browser reduce the anonymous-file problem that defines PhotoRec.
Its byte-to-byte backup tool also lets you image a questionable card before running repeated scans. Advanced Camera Recovery is useful for camera media where fragmented photo or video data defeats simpler carving tools.
The downside is price. Windows users get 100 MB of free recovery, while larger jobs require the $89 Pro license. Run the free scan first, then preview several full-size RAW files before paying.
